Be Gracious -- Whether You Win or Lose

Being gracious in victory and defeat is a key to building strong relationships. Strong relationships with the important people in your life are a key to interpersonal competence. Tuesday evening, we all go to see an example of a highly interpersonally competent person in action.

On Tuesday June 3, Senator Barack Obama garnered enough delegates to secure the Democratic Party nomination for President of the US. He was incredibly gracious in his speech in Saint Paul, MN. He went out of his way to compliment Senator Hillary Clinton, his strongest opponent in the primary elections.

Here is what he had to say…

Agile Web Development with Rails, 3rd Edition

source: weblog.rubyonrails.com

You asked for, heck, you demanded it, and now it’s becoming a reality. The original Rails book, Agile Web Development with Rails, is getting a facelift and the 3rd edition is now available as a beta book.

The book will be targeting Rails 2 and thus cover the many improvements in features and idioms that Rails have seen since the last edition of the book.

We also have a new author on board with the project: Sam Ruby. Sam co-authored the wonderful RESTful Web Services and have been involved with the Ruby and Rails communities for quite some time now. It’s fantastic to have him involved with the book.

Its getting downright exciting in the dynamic languages arena!

First, Sun hires the JRuby developers and implements killer Ruby support in Netbeans. Now, Microsoft announces IronRuby and the Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR)! Microsoft’s new DLR will support Ruby, Python, JavaScript, and Visual Basic. Since the DLR is built on top of the CLR, these dynamic languages will interoperate with the existing statically typed languages like C#.

Intel picks 'Atom' as name for new chip family

Intel has picked "Atom" as the new brand name for its latest microprocessor, the world's largest semiconductor company said.
The Intel Atom processor is the name for the new family of low-power processors, the brains of digital devices, that will power mobile Internet devices and ultra low-cost and small notebook and desktop personal computers.

Intel sees a big market for the Internet-connected devices that can fit in one's pocket and for what it is calling the netbook, a low-cost PC costing around $250.

Coming soon: Movies on flash memory cards

GALWAY, Ireland--PortoMedia is probably the only start-up in the world inspired by the movie Carlito's Way.

Company founder Chris Armstrong explains: Four years ago, he set out to his local DVD store to rent a movie. First, he stopped at the ATM to get cash. The store didn't have Twelve Angry Men, the movie Armstrong wanted. He settled for Carlito's Way instead. He then waited in line, paid for his rental, and returned to his car.

Sun hires Python pros in dynamic languages push

This blog initially misspelled the name of one of the Python programmers hired by Sun. His name is Frank Wierzbicki.

Sun Microsystems has hired high-profile Python programmers Ted Leung and Frank Wierzbicki, stepping up its bet on open source and scripting languages.

Sun has already hired other open-source luminaries such as Debian Linux founder Ian Murdock, in an effort to capitalize on open source and diversify beyond its roots in Java and Solaris.

Open-source developers make more money !!!

Want to make more money as an enterprise application developer? You're in luck--if you know open source.

According to a recent report from Bluewolf Consulting, enterprises increasingly deploy open-source software, and look to specialized application development on top of it, to drive business value:

YouTube to stream video this year ??

There are a number of sites out there that offer real-time video streaming. Justin.tv started the live video trend online, and now plenty of others have followed. If you visit sites like, Yahoo! Live, Mogulus, and Ustream. you'll see people streaming video from their bedroom using a simple webcam, and some even chat with their viewers simultaneously.

It's definitely a great way to promote yourself or just stay in touch with friends. But the scant number of people on these sites tells me not everyone is ready to go live.
